Environmental Solutions (Asia) Pte. Ltd., “ESA”, announced on 23 Nov 2021 that they have partnered up with Shell Eastern Petroleum (Pte.) Ltd., “Shell”, to be an off-taker for ESA’s circular pyrolysis oil generated from their newest plastic waste chemical recycling operations. This follows ESA’s announcement made a month earlier about their plastic chemical recycling facility receiving an International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification.

This collaboration will see Shell using circular pyrolysis oil to manufacture new plastics, achieving circularity of plastics by transforming waste into virgin material. The chemical recycling of plastics, also known as plastic pyrolysis, allows ESA to target contaminated and mixed plastics that are typically incinerated in Singapore. With only 4% of plastics being recycled in Singapore, plastic pyrolysis will pave the way towards greater recyclability in line with the country’s move Towards Zero Waste.

ESA’s ISCC PLUS certification serves as an indicator that the company’s operations meet the stringent environmental and social standards set by the third-party verification body. This certification shows the high level of traceability that the company has achieved in collecting and processing plastic waste, contributing to the development of the circular economy. ESA is proud to be the 1st ISCC PLUS certified pyrolysis plant in Singapore, the 2nd in APAC and the 15th globally.

“Creating the plastic circular economy is a step forward in realising Shell’s ambition to recycle 1 million tonnes of plastic globally by 2025. We are excited to be the pioneers for this project in Asia”.

   - Eileen Cai, Sustainability Chemicals Global Program Manager, Shell

“Sustainability is no longer just a preference for consumers. They expect, and will, switch brands to find alternative ones that holistically embrace sustainability”.

   - Lawrence Law, Chief Sustainability & Growth Officer, ESA

About Shell Energy and Chemicals Park

The Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Singapore is located at Pulau Bukom (Shell Bukom), which measures about 2.4 square km or equivalent to about 330 football fields. At Shell Bukom, we aim to produce cleaner energy products, such as biofuels, incorporating circularity, like waste plastics for feedstock, as well as being run on and supplying renewable energy. It is Shell’s only energy and chemicals park in Asia.

Shell Bukom houses a world-class Ethylene Cracker Complex and is integrated with one of the world’s largest mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) plants at Shell’s petrochemical site at Jurong Island to supply energy and chemical products to meet the growing needs of customers in the region and beyond. Shell Bukom is one of the first sites in Shell globally to deploy the digital twin technology to create a virtual representation of the site, with the ambition to enable its engineers to operate the plant remotely via augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. When fully implemented, the digital twin will enable the Park to operate more safely, competitively and innovatively, delivering new levels of efficiency, and plant intelligence. www.shell.com.sg

About NewOil

Plastic Waste to NewOil gives contaminated and hard-to-sort used plastics a second life. Such waste is diverse by nature and therefore complicated to recycle. Moreover, due to limitations in our local plastic recycling infrastructure: at some point in time, a majority of our plastic waste ends up in incineration - or in the oceans of the world.

ESA transforms plastic to circular pyrolysis oil — producing the first 100% Singapore-made NewOil.

About ESA

ESA, or Environmental Solutions Asia, brings engineering innovation to transform waste – building a sustainable future.

Founded in 1999, our two facilities in Tuas are designed to be Zero Carbon, Zero Energy, and Net-Zero Water. As a thought leader in the Recycling & Waste Management industry, we actively contribute to five out of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, as well as enable our clients and partners to realise their environmental targets.

Our subsidiaries: NewOil (TM) transforms waste plastics to renewable fuel and recycled plastic feedstock, while Secondlife connects waste generators and recyclers to optimise value chains – giving waste a second life and minimising negative impact to the environment.
